'The Trial of the Chicago 7' Review Thread

2020.09.25 03:43 SanderSo47 'The Trial of the Chicago 7' Review Thread

Rotten Tomatoes: 90% (41 reviews) with 7.92 in average rating
Metacritic: 75/100 (21 critics)
As with other movies, the scores are set to change as time passes. Meanwhile, I'll post some short reviews on the movie.
Sorkin has made a movie that's gripping, illuminating and trenchant, as erudite as his best work and always grounded first and foremost in story and character. It's as much about the constitutional American right to protest as it is about justice, which makes it incredibly relevant to where we are today, and to what's at stake in the coming election. The final note of defiance here offers a glimmer of hope for which many of us are starved right now. I'll take it.
-David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
Made by Paramount and tossed to Netflix in the pandemic uncertainty of 2020, “Chicago 7” isn’t exactly a groundbreaking vision, but it’s certainly a passion project of the “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” variety. It could have been made a few years after the Chicago 7 faced their fate and fit its moment, but registers as particularly robust now: Sorkin proves that courtrooms have always been at the mercy of a flawed process, yet subject to moral scrutiny at every turn. A look back at rabble-rousers from another era won’t change the world, but “Chicago 7” is a solid tribute to a few men who realized they could, even when the system they fought for came up short.
-Eric Kohn, IndieWire: B
The trial, as Sorkin presents it, is really about the soul of America — the ability to protest, to question the most fundamental actions of the government. The overlap between the 1968 Chicago protests and the Black Lives Matter protests that have taken place this year is all too obvious. Yet the true parallel, I think, is that “The Trial of the Chicago 7” is really about what it looks like when a society starts to treat people speaking freely as if they were doing something dangerous. The movie reminds you, quite stirringly, that the Chicago 7 weren’t attacking America. They were upholding it.
-Owen Gleiberman, Variety
And leave it to Sorkin — whose only other film as director, “Molly’s Game,” felt prescient in its portrayal of predatory men in Hollywood and beyond — to catch the mood of 2020 with a film he began working on many years beforehand. At a time of so much focus on police brutality, and a time when protest is being demonized as the election approaches, this story set 50 years ago feels oddly, frighteningly vital.
-Steve Pond, The Wrap
While many will draw parallels between scenes involving civil unrest to the events of 2020, the philosophical differences between Hayden and Abbie — cultural versus electoral revolution, respectively — ring closely to the debates raging within progressive politics today, and actually prove more interesting. But how much viewers engage with the “Trial of the Chicago 7” will have more to do with its naturally captivating story, and the comedic dialogue, than anything Sorkin as a director provides. But through a punch-the-air final act, one that’s the definition of defiance, Sorkin’s melodrama reassures us of the power of sticking to one’s beliefs.
-Robert Daniels, The Playlist: B-
Aaron Sorkin is at his most portentous with this inert film, stuffed with stars, which mislocates the point of the trial it dramatises
-Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian: 2/5
The script saves some of its most fiery material for them, the kind of thunderbolt Sorkin-isms that land with a satisfying crack. Though it allows them to inhabit quieter moments, too, and the movie is at its best when it roots itself in the real consequences of the case — not only for the men involved, but for a nation increasingly unable to bridge its most painful divides. In that, Chicago 7 frames the past not just as entertaining prologue but a living document; one we ignore at our own peril.
-Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly: B
The question of how we approach protest is an important one because it needs to be ingrained into our daily lives. I think even Sorkin would agree that our institutions have become infected with bad actors who seek to turn those institutions against the people they were meant to protect. “Protests are good” is a fine sentiment, but the culture is already there, and while Chicago 7 acknowledges that these protests will have internal conflict and face external violence, there needs to be more recognition that something has truly rotted America. Sorkin’s faith in institutions has clearly chipped away, but The Trial of the Chicago 7 shows he’s uncertain about what should go in its place.
-Matt Goldberg, Collider: B-
Certain events are rearranged from the factual timelines, and yes, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” exercises poetic license. This is not a documentary; it’s a dramatization of events that resonates with great power while containing essential truths, and it’s one of the best movies of the year.
-Richard Roeper, The Chicago Sun Times: 4/4
For a time, Steven Spielberg was attached to direct The Trial Of The Chicago 7, and his absence is felt in the televisual staging: For all the sentimental uplift of this film’s closing minutes, Sorkin lacks the master’s skill — flaunted in Lincoln and The Post — at enlivening gabby civics lessons. The film could have used some of Spielberg’s craft and twinkly open-hearted conviction... or, perhaps conversely, more of Hoffman’s radical, down-with-The-Man sensibility. Ultimately, Sorkin seems less interested in the actual politics of any of his seven than in the way their flipped bird to the establishment facilitates his own taste for zingers, clever comebacks, and grandstanding. Parallels to the present aside, Trial Of The Chicago 7 is ultimately more timeless than timely in its flaws and conventions. Which is to say that some things sadly never go out of fashion, like perversions of justice and eleventh hour surprise witnesses in legal dramas.
-A.A. Dowd, The A.V. Club: C+
Language is Sorkin’s power, and it’s easy to see what drew him to this project: language is what gives the characters here their power as well. And while there are moments that sound like Sorkin is preaching to the choir, there’s a great emphasis on the words the characters use, and how those words either get them in trouble, or ultimately give them strength. From a movie-making perspective, The Trial of the Chicago 7 is sturdy but not particularly revelatory. But as a delivery system for great performers rattling off great dialogue, it’s almost unbeatable.
-Chris Evangelista, /FILM: 7.5/10
While character development is a bit of an issue with so many personalities rioting, arguing and bantering, it doesn’t impede the thought-provoking nature of “Chicago 7” or parallels that Sorkin draws between the ‘60s and now – and without a bunch of narrative gymnastics. The filmmaker crafts an entertaining, immersive and ultimately optimistic spectacle that never forgets, especially at its ending, that humanity should always trump the system.
-Brian Truitt, USA Today: 3.5/4
Unfortunately, the film has relatively little of that kind of punchiness. As a director, Sorkin hasn’t yet grasped how to meld personal drama and historical sweep into a cohesive whole. Although the strong cast helps the film through some of its weaker segments, Sorkin’s attempt to bring a Spielbergian fluidity to the flashbacks to convention riot chaos often fall flat. But while The Trial of the Chicago 7 ends on something of a movie-of-the-week note, given the timing of its release as a current Department of Justice gins up spurious charges against political enemies, it nevertheless carries a certain past-is-prologue immediacy.
-Chris Barsanti, Slant: 2.5/4
“The Trial of the Chicago 7” offers an absorbing account, in some ways alarming and in some ways reassuring, of an earlier moment of polarization and violent conflict. It isn’t just like now, but the analogies are enough to get you thinking about what happens in a democracy when state power confronts popular dissent. A loud, chaotic mess. A tragedy and a farce. And that’s if we’re lucky.
-A.O. Scott, The New York Times
PLOT
Based on the story of the Chicago Seven, a group of seven defendants charged by the federal government with conspiracy in 1969 and 1970, inciting to riot, and other charges related to anti-Vietnam War and countercultural protests that took place in Chicago, Illinois, on the occasion of the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

2020.07.31 17:44 JeffreyBoswell NFL 2020: The Year In Preview

* Myles Garrett and former New Orleans Saint Kyle Turley meet for a charity helmet-removal ceremony on November 14th, the anniversary of Garrett's incident with Mason Rudolph. The event, dubbed "The Great American NFL Jerk-Off," raises $250,000 for charity.
* After 149 receptions in 2019, the Saints Michael Thomas one-ups himself, posting 150 catches, 79 more than Miami's DeVante Parker. Thomas then tweets at Parker: "Congratulations! You made the 'All Pronoun Team,' because no one knows your name. #He.'"
* DeAndre Hopkins explodes to start the season, with 32 receptions, 396 receiving yards, and 6 touchdowns in his first four games. Asked what the key to his amazing success is, Hopkins replies, "Miles and miles of separation ... from Bill O'Brien."
* Philip Rivers has the second-most famous surgery for a Colts quarterback when he undergoes a vasectomy in October. In his next game back on October 18 versus the Jets, Rivers shoots blanks in the first quarter, going 0-7.
Rivers bounces back the following week, when he and his wife announce that they're expecting their 10th child in July.
On the year, Rivers is efficient and limits his interceptions as the Colts ride the league's best rushing game and a strong defense to the AFC South title.
* In his first game as a Falcon, Todd Gurley rushes for 11 yards on 8 carries and 4 touchdowns, all 1-yard touchdown runs, as Atlanta beats Carolina, 31-24.
A knee injury sidelines Gurley in Week 4, an ailment which never fully heals. Gurley ultimately plays in only 7 games, and leads the league in touches, from the medical staff.
* Jameis Winston cuts his interception total from 30 in 2019 to 17 in 2020. Winston attributes the vast improvement not only to clearer vision due to Lasik surgery, but also to attempting only 34 passes as the backup to Drew Brees.
The Saints finish the season 12-4, one game ahead of the 11-5 Buccaneers, and beat the Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game.
* The Las Vegas Raiders christen Allegiant Stadium on opening day as former Raider legend Sebastian Janikowski serves as Master of Ceremonies. After ceremoniously breaking a bottle of Dom Perignon on the stadium's facade, Janikowski opens another bottle and offers glasses of champagne to each of the 32 Raiderettes, who all unanimously decline to drink.
The Raiders are toast in their opener, as the Saints crush them, 31-12.
* On opening day against the visiting Chargers, a sluggish Joe Burrow tosses 4 interceptions, is sacked 5 times, and vomits on the field in the third quarter. In the post-game press conference, Burrow apologizes for his performance, and promises to learn from his mistakes, and swears he'll never spend another Saturday night with Pacman Jones.
On the season, Burrow passes for 3,756 yards and 4 touchdowns with 16 interceptions, and the Bengals finish 3-13, last in the AFC North.
* After re-aggravating a back injury on October 4th, Rob Gronkowski announces his retirement. Just two days later, Gronk agrees to terms to host two new television shows during fall sweeps, Discovery Channel's "The Science of Drinking Games," and MTV's "Celebrity Sack Tap."
* On November 1st, with the Packers holding a 10-point lead over the visiting Vikings with 7 seconds left and with possession, a heartbroken Aaron Rodgers takes a knee, and proposes to former girlfriend Danica Patrick. In a touching twist, Brett Favre rolls up in a golf cart and presents the band, a green opal set in a 100% copper ring, as well as a Copper Fit wedding gown.
Patrick declines the offer via Twitter, and later reveals she left Rodgers for David Spade.
Rodgers leads the Packers to a second-place finish in the NFC North and a wild card berth in the playoffs.
* In November, Christian McCaffrey opens a nightclub in downtown Charlotte called "Run CMCBGB's WWJD," a venue that offers Christian rock, world-class atmosphere, and exotic VIP lounges, all in an alcohol-free environment. The club shutters its doors in December due to lack of interest.
McCaffrey is all business on the field, and leads the NFL in touches for the second consecutive year, with 399, and later pens a book chronicling his 2020 season, titled "Just Give Me the Darn Ball."
* ESPN's 2021 "Body" issue breaks new ground, featuring not athletes, but the equipment that trains them. Not surprisingly, football's "Jugs Machine" lands the coveted cover spot.
* Cam Newton easily wins the starting quarterback job in New England and dominates in the Patriots first four games. Newton enters the Week 5 game against the visiting Broncos with 4 rushing touchdowns and 7 passing scores, but literally loses his "s," crapping his pants when he sees Von Miller across the line.
Amazingly, the incident leads to an endorsement deal with Nautica's fashion sleepwear, in which Newton appears in print ads saying, "When you're pooped and need a change, try Nautica pajamas."
* On his first two rush attempts as a Bronco, Melvin Gordon fumbles, and the "Melvin Gordon II" memes are born, such as "Time II Bench Melvin Gordon," "Dos Ickies," "II Bad," "All II Often," and "Boyz II Bench."
Gordon's ball-handling struggles continue into October, but he eventually turns things around, thanks to the help of a clinic of hypnotists, whom Gordon refers to as his "Dream Team."
Gordon finishes the season with 799 yards on the ground and 450 receiving yards with 7 total touchdowns.
* The Seahawks visit the Rams on November 15th, and Jalen Ramsey and Jamal Adams convene at midfield prior to kickoff. The two exchange pleasantries and discuss plans to co-write a book tentatively titled "How to Alienate Friends, Influence Public Opinion, Be the Walking Definition of 'Disgruntled' and Force a Trade."
In a Week 14 contest versus the visiting Jets, Seattle defeats Adams' former team 27-13. Adams has 2 interceptions, but complains he could have played better.
* Bears legends Mike Ditka and Willie Gault team up to promote American Home Equity Bank & Semi-trust's "Double Reverse Mortgage," which encourages elderly Bears fans to "live fast, die soon."
Chicago's on-the-field product is just as untrustworthy, and a 2-5 start results in the firing of Matt Nagy on October 27th. Ditka is briefly considered for the job along with Bob Swerski, but the assignment ultimately goes to defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano, who leads the Bears to a 7-9 finish.
* With his signature blond hair back, Odell Beckham, Jr. announces the "Blond Ambition Tour 2020." Beckham later appears on the cover of Vogue, then completes the hat trick when he reveals that he is dating Madonna.
Beckham finishes the season with 87 receptions for 1,234 yards and 10 touchdowns, while the Browns finish 9-7, behind the Ravens and Steelers in the AFC North.
* Attendance is Los Angeles for the Chargers first four home games is abysmal, with attendance averaging around 30,000 in SoFi Stadium, which seats 70,000. Many attribute it to the unwillingness of San Diego and surrounding area residents to travel to Los Angeles, a phenomenon called "SoCal Distancing."
The Chargers struggle on the field also, finishing in a tie for last in the AFC West with the Raiders at 6-10.
* Patrick Mahomes purchases an island in the Lesser Antilles on September 17th to celebrate his 25th birthday. With a massive $477 million contract under his belt, Mahomes christens the getaway "Treasure Island," and posts a Gilligan's Island-themed pic on Twitter showing Mahomes as Gilligan and Andy Reid as the Skipper.
Mahomes passes for 4,788 yards and 42 touchdowns and the Chiefs repeat as Super Bowl champions when they defeat the Saints, 31-27.
* After seeing the 2010 movie Inception, Dallas owner Jerry Jones asks his R&D department to inquire into the possibility of "planting a seed in the head of that agent of Dak Prescott's."
Jones is talked out of the scheme and into "Plan B," which is merely receiving an 8x10 signed photograph of Leonardo DiCaprio.
* Former Carolina and Dallas defensive end Greg Hardy is victimized by an elaborate prank organized by Sasha Baron Cohen. In the scheme, Cohen, posing as a UFC matchmaker named "Joo Shih Tzu," convinces Hardy to participate in the organization's first inter-gender contest, to take place at UFC 253 in Las Vegas against a female opponent to be named later. Hardy readily accepts before Cohen reveals the ruse, sending Hardy into a frenzy.
* Drew Brees finally "takes a knee," albeit just to the groin, when he appears as a guest on MTV's "Johnny Knoxville's Jackass NFL Punt, Pass, and Kick in the Balls Special." The show airs as part of the network's "Football is Back" programming on September 9th, sandwiched between 12 hours of "Ridiculousness."
* In the Packers home opener against the Lions on September 20, Aaron Rodgers connects with DaVante Adams on a 15-yard TD pass late in the first quarter. Adams then celebrates with a Lambeau Leap into the empty stands and bangs his head on an empty seat. Adams enters the NFL's concussion protocol, while the Packers secure a federal loan to outfit the end zone seats with NASCAR's "SAFER Barrier."
* Gardner Minshew II lights up the Bengals in Week 4 for 450 yards passing and 5 TD passes in a 42-17 Jags rout. Minshew is named AFC Offensive Player of the Week, and honor topped just a day later when Minshew is tapped for the role of Bo Darville in Smokey and the Bandit 4.
* Washington stuns the Cowboys, 24-23, on Thanksgiving, led by 3 TD scores, 2 on the ground, from Dwayne Haskins. Haskins celebrates back in D.C. on Friday night, a little too hard, and is cited for urinating in public, leading to the embarrassing headline "Dwayne Vein Drain" in The Washington Post.

Kwpluckett: #07 Hugo (2011)
Date started: 5/18/2020 Date Watched: 5/31/2020 Runtime: 2h11 Rating: PG Watched on: Netflix Rotten Tomato rating: 93%
Imdb synopsis: In 1931 Paris, an orphan living in the walls of a train station gets wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton.
Thoughts: Great atmosphere, great setting. The music, sound design and cinematography really bring you in to the environment and bring the world alive. Sasha Baron Cohen's physical comedy managed to make me laugh despite his over-the-top juvenile antics and Ben Kingsley is (as always.) great. The lead actors are fantastic, particularlyconsidering their age. The automaton is so cool and makes me want to design some sort of kinetic model. Imaginative story full of mystery, child-like wonder, and adventure. I love the the throw back to early film and 19th/ early 20th century literature. Really quality film for the family.
I give it a 4/5

2018.09.29 18:35 drew0217 Didn't kiss her. Can I still recover our chances?

Hello, I recently started medical school and immediately found this one student really attractive. She's funny, social, fairly laid back, beautiful and smart (Duh!). A group of new students went on a river floating/drinking trip a couple weeks into school, where I first started talking with her. We clearly had good chemistry and were joking around together for hours. I didn't interact much with her in class at that point, but then a couple weeks later a larger group went on a camping retreat. I made a point to drink/hang out with her (made sure she was my beer pong partner lol) for the majority of the one day trip, and again she was really engaging and seemed attracted to me. After the trip I regretted not asking for her number, but decided I would in the near future.
About a week later we went to a medical school scholarship party where I hung out with her once again, she pulled me to the dance floor (where we just made fun of the terrible dancing lol). Then a small group of us went to a local bar, where I finally asked for her number. The next night there was a party at another student's house, and she messaged me on FB, asking if I was going. I texted her that I was, and we ended up meeting at her place with another friend/student who drove us to the party. Again we spent the majority of the time talking just to one another, despite their being a decent amount of people there.
At this point she opened up and started talking about past sexual relationships. She mentioned that I was ripped (just resigned as a beach lifeguard for several years so I am in pretty decent shape lol) and was clearly hitting on me. I mentioned how my car got totaled a week into school and she offered to drive me to Costco the next day for groceries, just to be nice. She also cheered to us being single and seemed to complain about that, even though I never mentioned that I was single. This told me that she had discussed whether or not I was single with other friends. Most of us went to a bar after it got to a certain hour. We hung out again most of the time.
When people finally started going home I mentioned to her that an Uber would be $40 from there to my place, and she suggested I share a ride with her to her place. We did, but when I got back to her place I started feeling a little uncomfortable since we were both really drunk and I didn't want to ruin any potential I had with her by kissing her while drunk. I thought it would give the wrong impression, and to be honest I was a little intimidated to do that (It's been a couple years since I dated, I'm now 27). We continued with small talk and I said "I guess I'll get an Uber home", and she replied "you do whatever you want". While we waited I noticed she was spilling water out of her glass, again showing me that she was pretty drunk. I went home with just a hug, feeling like that was the right/gentlemanly way to go.
The next day we went to Costco and everything seemed great. I was resolved to kiss her or at least tell her that I liked her since we would be sober at that point. After unloading the groceries at my place I asked her to stay and we watched a little TV of a funny show she seemed to enjoy (Sasha Cohen's "Who is America"). I wimped out again and didn't want her to feel "trapped" in my apartment while telling her how I felt. I texted her soon after she left to thank her and we texted all night.
The next week things seemed ok. I think I made the mistake of not engaging her enough one day that week that was designated for lame "activities" in a rec center and no lectures (weird day for medical school, but it happened). I was talking to other female students, just because I hadn't met them yet and they happened to be in my "activities group". I said hi briefly but I didn't hang out with her during the lunch break and I feel like that might have pissed her off. The next couple days she seemed kind of distant and not as engaging. She and her roommate threw a Fall break party that Friday, where she again seemed a little distant. Also, there's another student that she always seems to hang out with (he has a girlfriend though) and she seemed to cling to him at the party (his GF was not there, but nothing sexual was going on, just always seemed to be near him, beer pong partner, etc.). I wonder if she did that just for a buffer from me...
During the Fall break I texted her and told her that I really enjoy spending time with her and wanted to see if she'd be down to go for a hike over the break. She said sure, but she was out of town for the first half. The day she returned was the day I was scheduled to have my wisdom teeth pulled, so I tried to see if she would want to hang out a few days after. She then said she had gotten sick and shouldn't (not sure if she was actually sick). Now she still seems a little distant from me, she'll laugh at most of my jokes and still engage me in conversation, but something definitely changed after that "activities" day.
Did I completely blow it by not kissing her or at least telling her I liked her either that night at her house alone, or the next day at my place after Costco? Do you think there's still a chance that I can regain momentum and recover with her? I'm thinking about asking her out to a hike again next weekend. Hopefully I didn't hurt her feelings by making her feel rejected, or disappoint her by not being enough of a man. Especially in today's sexual climate I try not to be too aggressive, but sometimes I let my hesitation/fear take that too far.
I feel like an idiot by not being open with her in person, especially after she gave me all of those signs over the weeks. She complemented me many times, and I still wimped out. Not sure what my problem is, but I really hope I can still start something special with her. I'm a nice/sensitive guy who she was/is attracted to physically, so hopefully if she has enough patience for me, she'll give me another chance.
I really appreciate you reading all of this, any advice is greatly appreciated!

2018.09.29 07:01 drew0217 Didn't kiss her, how do I recover the potential? (If that's even possible)

2017.05.08 18:03 Dictarium [DISCUSSION] My Pop Essential Albums List: Version 2

A True Pop Essentials List, Version 2
The last time I made one of these was about a year ago and I did it in 2 days because of a spontaneous conversation I had with theallrightgatsby. This time, I've taken around three weeks spread out over a few months, and put more thought into it as well.
I've done my best to compile a list of albums that, if you listen to front-to-back, will give you a perfectly crisp view of what pop music is, what it was, and what it could be in the future (though, as you'll see with the drastic change that's happened throughout the course of pop history, this is very difficult to predict).
There are 179 albums here. For artists who are sufficiently important but don't have a solid album-length body of work, a "Greatest Hits" record has been used. Hyperlinked to every decade header, you'll find a collage of all the albums in that decade for your bookmarking purposes if you'd rather view them like that.
Every album here, in my opinion, meets one or more of four criteria:
  1. Too popular to ignore (e.g. Nevermind)
  2. Incredibly influential (e.g. The Man-Machine)
  3. Incredibly high-quality pop album (e.g. Make It Big)
  4. High-quality album exemplary of a pop sub-genre that deserves recognition (e.g. Take Off Your Pants and Jacket)
One last note, I think it's silly to call an album that isn't even 3 years old "essential". For this reason, my list only goes up to 2014. Carly stans will have to wait a year before she is up for her first ballot.
Before I talk anymore, let's get to the albums themselves.

Now,

that list is quite daunting. It's 179 albums, but at about 25 albums per decade early on and later going up to about 35 albums per decade, that's only about 2-4 albums per year which even then seems incredibly restrictive. But, regardless, you may be saying to yourself, "Self, that sure is a shitload of albums," and your Self may respond "Yeah, it is. Isn't there an easier way to get acquainted with pop as a genre?"
Yes, yes there is.
This time around, I'm including something I'm gonna call (for lack of a better name; suggest some in the comments if you think this one's shit) the "Platinum Essentials". This is a list of 50 albums picked from the list above that is a much more of a handshake than a hug with the pop genre, but should still give you a pretty good understanding of it.
Maybe once you've tackled those 50 albums, you can dive deeper into this list!
Anyway, here's the

Platinum Essentials List

"Golly gee. 50 still is an awful large number," you might be continuing say. I agree, it is! So what I've gone ahead and done is put together 7 playlists of all of the "Highlight" songs from the list that you can breeze through in, like, 11-12 hours.
Here they are:
Notes:
  • The Chronic is not on spotify. I've replaced a song from that with a song from Dr. Dre's 1999 album, 2001.
  • Taylor Swift's entire discography is not on Spotify. She is not included in the playlists as a result.

Fun Statistics

It's hard enough to make one essential pop album, but more than one?! That's crazy! Here's the artists who appeared multiple times on the list.
Two Times
  • Frank Sinatra

  • Beyoncé
Four Times

Five Times

Here are the years with the most essential albums:
Seven Albums

Five Albums

Discussion

  1. Are there any glaring omissions in your eyes? Anything that has no business being here?
  2. How many of these albums have you listened to? As a frame of reference in case you're discouraged, I've only listened to 75 front-to-back and I made the damn list!
  3. What do you think makes an album "essential"?
  4. Starting next week (I think), I want to bring back the Essential Pop Album of the Week segment I used to do. What albums should I start out with? Also, the reason I stopped it before was because it was just annoying to do every week. If anybody wants to volunteer to do a particular album as a guest writer, let me know. I'll come up with a template of some kind and find a date for you or something.

Questions Answers
Do you get fan mail from dyslexic Maroon 5 fans? EVERY DAY.
How have you liked working with Sofia Vergara on Modern Family? Also is she that hot in person? Edit: fixed Very hot. Eric Stonestreet straight called me out for starring at her butt.
Can you discuss the movie you guys are gonna be doing with Seth Rogen? A little bit. Its a big action comedy movie. Seth is helping us produce it. which basically means he helps us talk to dudes in suits that we're to immature to talk to and he also will help us sell our movie to the studio. ALSO, also, Seth and Evan have given us notes to make our movie more movie-ish. It's NOT a workaholics movie but it is starring the three of us.
Hey Adam, on workaholics you guys incorporate drug use that i haven't really seen depicted on tv before (whippets etc.) Do you guys get any shit from comedy central about that stuff? Workaholics and house party are great, glad to see you made it. Keep up the good work man. Thanks man. Naw, Comedy Central are like your buddies cool parents that your parents hate because they let us smoke weed in the basement.
Any news on Season 4?? It's coming back in JANUARY!
Dad Dicks...when does that happen? the moment you impregnate a woman? or when the child is born? because I'm still waiting for my dad dick. LOOSE BUTTHOLE! I believe you don't get your fully grown dad dick till you're about 10. You have to have swung on a man regarding a bad little league pitch for your dad dick to fully unfold.
You want to shut down Reddit? You think you're God bro? Naw, i dont got those big god titties.
Any sitcoms within the last five years that you'd sacrifice a small-to-extra medium sized person to write for? EASTBOUND AND DOWN is the funniest rawest show to come out in the past... forever.
How much pot will you and Seth Rogan smoke in your upcoming film? A LOT.
Who is the one Actocomedian that you consider to be your biggest influence? Who got you into comedy? I literally cried when Chris Farley died. I did impressions of him on the radio in Omaha where i grew up. They would pay me in concert tickets and Matchbox 20 cd's. When he died I was devastated. I thought he was the funniest man in the world. Sadler was also a comedy super hero.
On a scale of 1 to tight butthole, how cool is it working with Seth Rogen? The tightest. The dudes funny and real and not hollywood douchey.
What is your favorite 90s nickelodeon show? I liked boy meets word, and doug, and rug rats, and california dreaming, and scrambled porno.
Were you there when Blake broke his back? Yes. it was at our house we lived in together. we were throwing a holiday party. we had a meat and cheese try so you know its real.
How do porn stars have anal sex and her colon looks as clean as her vagina? How much prep does that take? Am I correct in assuming that 'spur-of-the-moment' anal can be risky? I'm guessing they clean it really well with moist toweletts (sp?) and prob dont eat anything for awhile bf.
What was it like being asked personally, through his assistant, to sing backup for John Mayer's new album? Also, do you say "collar-less leather jacket" or "color-less lather jacket"? I was suppose to say "Collar-less" but my mouth wasnt working well that day...
Hey Adam is it possible if I could i get a copy of your workout video so I can turn bi's into tri's possibly perhaps turn my tri's into god-knows-what? Dude... I wanna make a workout video. I think workout videos are the funniest things.
Hey Adam I am a big fan. Any advice for an aspiring stand up comedian? Also do you guys get as weird on drugs as much as portrayed on the show? Just do as much stand up as you can. More than what seems normal. Become an addict to it. AND no I dont do that many drugs. The characters on workaholics are real dummies.
What is the creative process on Workaholics like? Is it mostly scripted or is there a lot of improv on set? We write full scripts but when we're shooting we cut loose and get weird. We like to have fun on set and thats the best way.
Thanks for doing this! What kind of advice can you give someone who's looking to make it in the acting world? Don't be a pussy about it. If its something you want. go for it as hard as you can.
Ok. What color are your farts? Green.
Huge fan of the show, my best friend introduced me to it. Do you have a favorite episode? Do you have a favorite beeliquor? Out of all the famous people you've met, which one was the coolest? 1) Um... I like real time, business trip, checkpoint gnarly (B-rad) I dunno... I really like workaholics. haha. 2) Vodka, bud light 3) Seth Rogan is pretty cool. I also met wesley snipes which was insane.
What's been your favorite project to date? WORKAHOLICS seasons 1-4.
Is it true that you were at the same brothel in Brazil as Justin Bieber? I wish.
Yo Adam whats your stance on OTPHJs and the girls who give them? They're rough...just take it out the pants, ya know?
When do you plan on doing another stand up tour? We saw you in Nashville, and you were amazing! I'm hoping to go back out in jan or feb.
How much fun was it filming "Pitch Perfect"? It was truly one of the best times of my life. Louisiana is my second home.
How often do you attend Nebraska football games? Once a year. I'll be at the IOWA game.
If you could star in any movie ever, what movie would that be and what role would you have? RUDY as rudy.
The Adam Devine's House Party is pretty tight butthole. I'm a big standup comedy nerd. But I've never heard of these people. Where did you find these people Mr. Adam Sir? EDIT: P.S. I'm your biggest fan, Please let me suck your dick? I give the best toothy bj's! A lot of them are my buddies from stand up that haven't been on tv and the rest we're guys that showcased and I thought they were funny. I wanted the show to give new coics the chance to do stand up but also something a lil weird a diff.
You're a little older since your last AMA. During that time are you any closer to attaining dad dick status? Nope...no one is pregnant as far as I'm aware.
Erik Griffin was asked in his AMA a while back about who he thought was the most like their character on Workaholics and he said that you were. Can you confirm this? and if asked the same question, who would you say is most like their character on the show? Um... maybe me. I'm slightly less stupid tho.
Can you make me a hemp necklace? YES and i'M WILDLY GOOD. YOU want beads? you want it to swirl ??
Hey Adam! You are awesome and great and all of that. Do you ever hang out with anyone from workaholics off the set? Who do you hang out with the most? All the time. they are my best friends.
Hey Adam! Who has been your favorite person to work with on Modern Family? Everyone is cool but RICO and I are homeboys.
How is Alice in real life? Does she still want to strangle the shit out of you three or are you guys friends? Maribeth Monroe is a sweetheart and nothing like alice but she is wildly when being so mean.
I hope this doesn't make me sound like a dick, but it seems like you play the same character on most shows you're on. Obviously, on Modern Family you're basically the opposite of your crude Workaholics counterpart, but you still have that dopey quality. Do you feel like you're being typecast or setting yourself up to be typecast? I think you just do what you do best. will ferrell, ben stiller, Seth Rogan, sander, black, sasha baron cohen, all those guys do the same stuff. You just do what you do to be your funniest. I'm not Daniel Day Lewis and I'm not trying to be.
I saw Erik Griffin do stand-up comedy at a college last year, and he was funny as shit...I distinctly remember him talking about a 18-year old couple up front and how she was probably terrible at dick sucking. They ended up leaving, and I ended up on the floor laughing. He then took some questions afterwards and he said that you were probably the funniest person in real life that he's ever met, and that Jet Set would always sell Workaholics t-shirts on a beach in Cali when y'all weren't filming. Anyways, 2-part question: I've noticed a lot of Chris Farley influence in your comedy, have you ever thought about joining SNL? And, do you have any advice for aspiring comedy writers? Just do it dude. you cant get experience doing something without doing it. You'll suck for awhile but if its something you really wanna do, stick with it and you'll get better.
Who are you? Genuine question, am British. I'm the lead singer of Maroon 5.
Go Big Red? Yup.
What's it like working with Andrew Santino? His standup is so unique. You might call him Mr. Steal yo girl haha. Also, that joke he did about his butt (I won't give it away) almost made me literally throw up. Stay tight butthole. Santino is a buddy hes a really funny and good dude
Adam! Loved the into skits for House Party. Question though, how much creative freedom do y'all have in Workaholics? Btw I'm doing my first bodybuildin competition this spring and want to work some of your posing routine into it. Might be too meta, but it's time to get weird They let us basically do what we want. com cent has been very cool to us.
Adam! When are we going to get another tight butthole party here in Austin, Texas?! We wanna come back for sxsw but we we're shooting this year!
Do you think "Smooth" By Rob Thomas and Santana is better than "Panama" by Van Halen? Panama.. all day and well into the niiight.
EVERY DAY. I thought 14 year old girls just thought I was the sexist dude with an amazing voice for awhile.
Urrr...yeah we're gonna need to see some proof that you've been caught peekin at Gloria's boobs...some sort of description should suffice. Supple
Did you ever doubt that you'd make it to where you are now. Ugh...yeah, but those moments we're fleeting.
MARRY FUCK KILL: alice, jillian, blake. I would Marry all of them.
Great show love you guys but i was wondering how much actual writing is involved in the show do you guys just get a plot and just go from a to b what has your favorite thing to improv on the show. No, we write a script and take it pretty seriously. sometimes when our shooting call is 5:30 am you don't wanna/cant improv so it's nice to have a funny script to fall back on.
Not a question. Just wanted to share my serving book with you (I'm a bartendeserver) and tell you I love Workaholics. Later, brah! Check it. OH I LIKE THAT!

Questions Answers
How many people have confused you and the guy who did Borat? I get that a lot! I make restaurant reservations and get mixed up with Borat all the time. But in person, no mix-up.
Given skating's reputation with sexuality, what do you make of the situation going on in Russia right now with gay rights? How do you think the sport will respond given its popularity there? I honestly think that social issues should really not be a part of the Games. People should have their rights to be who they want to be and love who they want to love.
The Olympics is about showing what you've done with your life, your dream as an athlete and sharing that with the World. The choices that are being made right now with the Sochi games are really sad and disrespectful to the athletes.
We're all athletes, there should be no one who has to hide who they are. It's kind of unfortunate that it's popped up now and I hope it gets resolved so all athletes regardless of sexual orientation feel welcomed at the Games.
Sorry for this being off topic, but you were great in Blades of Glory. What was it like hanging out with Will Ferrell? It was an incredible experience, surreal, and the film actually captures the quirks of figure skating that is actually true. Will Ferrell is really a nice, genuine person, and appreciative of figure skaters.
Is the bottom of the skate like, razor thin? If so, have you ever been cut by it? Ive always wondered that about ice skates. Yes, someone landed a double axel on my leg, and I had 21 stitches.
This is a totally off topic question, who is your favorite Ranger of all time? I would have to say Lundqvist...I've met him and he seemed like a nice person.
What would Brian Boitano do? If he were here right now?
What are you up to these days and your plans after you graduate? Btw how was japan and what's with the game show? Japan was amazing...love Tokyo. Was there for 30 hours. Game show is airing in Sept. Basically had to balance on a stand the size of a coaster, 20 ft in the air, and the stand get smaller and smaller.
Whats it like staying in the Olympic village? The Olympic Village is incredible. Every country. Every sport. Housed under one roof. Although we're all different between sports and language, there's this shared mission of purpose. We just get each other. We all spend our whole lives doing sport with the hopes of getting to this point. We also really wait once every four years, unlike basketball and football, to showcase what we can really do.
Do you still get carded? Always! Do you know I'm almost 29?
Is rampant sex at the Olympics fact or media driven fantasy? There are different Olympic experiences for different athletes.
I wouldn't know because the ladies figure skating event is near the end of the games, so my experience is different from an athlete who would compete early on and have their competition over with during the first week.
How often do you skate now? Depending on my class schedule...4-5x a week, when school rolls around 2x a week.
Did you march in both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Olympics? Did you prefer one over the other -- and why? (I know that all athletes are entitled to participate in both, but some skip one or the other for various reasons.) I preferred the Opening just because there's so much anticipation. There's just so much energy and there are just so many hopes ... so many dreams .. so much promise. It was my favorite event at the Olympics.
Can you still get your ankles above your head? Yes. That is something I can still do ... surprisingly.
What is your biggest guilty pleasure? Probably Gossip Girl. I absolutely love that show. When I moved to New York and it was on, I liked a lot of the same places. There are things that I could relate too.
So what is your favorite olympic sport aside from Figure Skating? Gymnastics, what these gymnasts do are mind boggling. It takes so much strength and balance. They put their bodies through the ringer.
How did you come up with the idea for Snoxx? I was up late with a friend of mind. I was frustrated with doing laundry with socks that didn't match, and there is something that needs to be done about it. Socks that snap together! Everyone loses their socks.
Hi! Big fan here! As well as aspiring figure skater, any tips/suggestions to improving in competitions? It all happens in practice, need to prepare yourself to do it everyday, even if you're tired or not feeling well. Practice translates to competitions.
What are you studying, and what interests you beside figure skating? I am competing my core requirements, I'm likely to declare a major in political science. Columbia has a great liberal arts program that gives me a good foundation.
What is your workout/nutrition routine when you aren't training? A very specific and healthy diet...lean protein, vegetables, minimal food intake and heavy exercise. Running, Yoga, Soul Cycle, and heavy core workouts.
How do you keep from getting extremely dizzy when doing spins? Stay centered, stay in one place...as soon as you start traveling and creating distance, then you will feel dizzy.
Hi Sasha! Thanks for talking to us! What's it like being a world-renowned Olympian attending college? Do people recognize you right away in class? No! I'm under the radar at school. I was before their time, as I'm a bit older. It's a good experience for me, because I can blend in at school.
What are some things you had to give up or not be able to participate in because you were training for the olympics? Any regrets? I have no regrets because it was what I was driven to do. I sacrificed school, going to college at the traditional time, hanging out with friends. Really a lot of the experiences that one experiences from age 7-25. But these experiences have shaped me as well. I'm kind of doing things in reverse.
What do you do for fun? I really enjoy yoga, running, taking weekend trips into nature and good friends. Right now, my puppy takes a lot of my spare time.
Hi Sasha! I am a HUGE fan! What was your favorite program ever and your favorite time competiting it? Thanks so much :) My Olympic short program in 2006 is one of my favorites. That event was pretty much the pinnacle of my skating career and I'll always remember it fondly.
Whats the meanest thing you've ever heard a skater say to another skater? I feel like I try to block negative energy and let that go.
Off the top of my head, I would just say that skaters get very possessive and territorial. If you happen to get in their way, they aren't afraid to lash out and get their space back.
Do you have fond memories of your 2006 free skate because it won you a medal, or not so well because of how it began? It was a beautiful program with amazing music. Romeo and Juliet was the program that I did for my long at the Olympics and it really was a labor of love. Even though it wasn't the magical Olympic program that I wanted, I found some strength deep inside that I didn't have and that taught me a lot.
I realize that it has really served me well in my life's transition and helped me to fight back when things aren't going perfectly.
Can you wear the Snoxx in skates, or do the buttons get in the way? I've never tried! I wear Snoxx around the house and to work out. Need to wear tights for ice/figure skating.
So proud of you and THANK YOU for all of your hard work! Who are your role models? What inspires you? Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Robinson is very inspiring. I always admire athletes that deal with something other than just their sport and represent something bigger. Definitely Jackie Robinson.
Hi Sasha. Do you ever go down to Wollman Rink and show off just for fun? I would! I actually skated at Wollman quite a bit this fall when Hurricane Sandy took out Chelsea Piers. It's a beautiful rink.
What is your favorite figure skating trick? It can be the one you find most aesthetically pleasing, the one you are best at, or anything else - I don't want to restrict you. Spins...the wide spin.
Hi. What made you choose Columbia university? I love NYC! I wanted to be in a mature college situation, they have a GS program that is great, and I can pursue business opportunities while studying and going to school as well.
How tall are you? What size are your skates? I am 5'2" and my shoe size is a size 5.
Two part question: What sport, when combined with figure skating, would make it more exciting? And would you consider taking up fencing? I would love to fence! I think fencing is such a beautiful sport with such a wonderful history. I don't think it would be a good idea to hand me any equipment though because of the liability.
What other sports besides figure skating do you like to watch and/or play? I like to play soccer. I like to play my own made up form of rugby. What I love most is to dance.
Who are your favorite current skaters? I'd have to say Evan Lysacek is probably my favorite skater. I've known him since I was 12 years old. His determination and work ethic really show you that it isn't always the most talented person, but the person most willing to take it home.
If you were not a figure skater, what career path would you have gone on? Very interesting question!
I always imagined myself as a trauma surgeon or a litigator, or maybe even a philosopher.
Can you play hockey? I can skate better than a hockey player, but I have no stick-puck coordination.
How much do off-ice workouts play into your training ...and would you ever consider teaching classes? I think off-ice is incredibly important to skating. Yoga is a part of my regiment, as is jogging and pilates. I also have come up over the years with a tailored warmup and cool down that's helpful to skating that incorporates all of these. I have actually have taught a few classes and seminars that teach skaters to prepare. It's also something I can do through Thuzio. (www.thuzio.com)
Hi Sasha thanks for doing this. What was the first moment when you realized that you wanted to skate for a living? I think when I was probably 11 or 12 years old and I did my first show. I went and then watched my favorite skaters on Champions on Ice and Stars on Ice and that's when I realized that people do this for work ... performing. I said 'you know what, this could be a career opportunity.'
What is your favorite restaurant in NYC? That's tricky because I always love trying new places. I have some go-to's that are fantastic like the Pearl Oyster Bar and Meatball Shop.
I was a freshmen at Aliso Niguel High when you were a senior. Did you ever attend class? Did you have a social life (assuming you had a rigorous training schedule) in your high school days? Now that I'm looking back at it I don't think I ever saw you on campus. Honestly I just took one class at Aliso Niguel and really focused on training, doing most of my classes in a private school. It was really for the experience. I wanted to go through what my peers were going through.
What are the relationships between figure skaters like? Are there big rivalries? There will always be a very intense competitive nature within the sport because we sacrifice and dedicate our lives to this passion called figure skating. We want to do our best and we want to be our best. That's always part of the sport when you are competing at a very high level.
What was the most difficult time in your competitive career, 2002-06, and why? You'd be surprised. I actually think it was when I tried to come back at 25 and make the 2010 Olympic team. Between the injuries and the time off ... You don't have that young, athletic enthusiasm that you have in the beginning.
You mentioned running as a hobby. Have you ever competed in any races? What are your personal bests for distances? I run for fun, not in a race. I don't go very fast. I'll jog for 45 minutes to an hour just to get the heart rate up and to be outside.
Hi Sasha! How do you balance school and your career? Ivy League schools are hard, man. It is really difficult. Some semesters, I do part-time to go on tour. School is my passion right now. I also take the summer programs which helps. Columbia's student body is so bright and competitive, and it's a wonderful environment to learn in.
Hi Sasha, Can you explain how figure skating training has shaped your body's anatomy differently than say training for any other sport? If you stop moving and start sitting, your body changes a lot. That's for sure. It's why I'm a very active person, always running, or skipping, or taking some type of class. Sure, my body is different now than it was at 18 or 19, but skating built up an amazing cardio capacity and is amazing for balance, flexibility.
Alright, on the off chance that we cross paths one day and I recognize you, what is my best pick up line I can throw your way? I was going to try the classic, "hey girl... let me buy you some mozzarella sticks." On a more serious note, what's something that you've always wanted to do but never had to chance to? What type of books do your read, and what are your go to favorites? I do love to read. When I'm taking classes, I don't have that much time for free reading. I really enjoy historical novels, something like The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a favorite.
Why do you go by Sasha? Alexandra is a beautiful name! At school, I generally go by Alex. Sasha is just the Russian nickname for all Alexandra or Alexander's, so it is a heritage thing.
What's Scott Hamilton like in real life? Scott Hamilton is a wonderful person, limitless energy, positive and empowered attitude. He's inspiring person to a lot of people around the world. I've been so lucky to work with him and get to know him as a person.
Seriously though, congratulations. What does your training schedule look like when you are gearing up for a competition? I remember the days of college swimming and that was intense enough. I couldn't imagine training on the Olympic level. My daily training schedule would start with 30 minutes of running to warm up, some pilates, stretching and core training Then I'd skate for 90 minutes, take a break, skate for another 90 minutes, cool down, go to the gym and do circuit training or sprints and then some physical therapy.
Hi Sasha, love how they named the "I" spin after you. What changes (if any) do you think can be made to competition rules to make figure skating more exciting? I think it is very exciting. You lose a lot of it on TV. When you see it live, you have a different appreciation for the speed, height, athleticism and power. I think it's a really incredible sport.
What prompted your decision to come back to the 2010 nationals? And follow-up: what was going through your mind the day of the competition? How did you feel? I was training really well the year prior and I didn't feel completely finished with the sport.
I had this desire to compete and I didn't want to have any regrets. I was just compelled from within with that thought.
I see that we are currently attending the same university. If people were to recognize you on campus, would you prefer people to ignore you or to come up and say hello? A few people do recognize me, and it's fun to say hello. I welcome it, but it's also nice to blend in...
I play hockey, so I can relate to figure skating...Do you have bad knees? I think you know that it's just part of the sport.
We totally beat up our bodies for two decades and the effects will be there. It is part of my life and I've learned to manage it. Things like swimming, yoga and pilates help me with that.
Hello there! I was wondering, given all your accomplishments, what was the happiest moment of your life so far? After skating a perfect performance is an amazing feeling, but you are still alone, and it is a fleeting moment. The relationships in your life is more satisfying because it is not fleeting and something you can share.
What is it that you do in order to calm your nerves when going to do a routine in front of thousands of people? You really have to keep it simple. You have to focus on your breathing. Focus on your training. Trust your body and don't let the outside distractions take over.
How often are you recognized on the street? Not often. If maybe I go to a Rangers game, it will happen more often, but if I'm just going out like anyone else, not that much.
Who have you met at the Olympics that left you star struck? I don't think anyone! Every athlete is amazing and has their own story to the table. I get more fascinated and I have respect for different sports that I haven't come across. It's more of a melting pot of admiration rather than being blown away from one competitor.
What's your favorite near-Columbia hangout? Milano's Market, I get lunch there quite often.
What was it like handing the phone to President Bush during the 2002 Opening Ceremony? I called my Mom, and she didn't believe me when I handed the phone over. She fell of the chair when he answered the phone. He was very gracious and in the spirit of the games. I was 17, and it was an awe moment.
What is your favorite song to skate to and why is it Aerosmith - I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing? Is it Aerosmith? I love classical music, even Frank Sinatra, the range and emotion in the music makes me want to skate, move and interpret.
Did you and Shaun White actually date? I remember him having a huge crush on you. Really the only time I met him was at the Closing Ceremonies, after most of that had already been written. him. We come from very different sports and we don't really overlap. He's an incredibly gifted athlete and I'm proud of him, but there were no dates.
How much can you bench press? Men do bench press for lifts, but no I don't bench press.
When you go to the bar, what's your drink of choice? It's seasonal...white wine, champagne, bellini.
If I scrolled through Sasha Cohen's iPod, I would find... Everything...Led Zeppelin, Robin Thicke, Etta James, Michael Jackson, Glenn Miller, Eminem...I like to keep it fresh, something for every mood.
This will probably get buried, but you and I went to elementary school together in Pasadena! Long time ago!
How legit was blades of glory. I think a lot of the personality representations were fairly accurate, which is comical because I think most people think they were a joke. If you were in the skating world, you could definitely pick up on some of that.

What's your favourite language to speak/heawrite? French/Hawai'ian/Arabic.
And Rampart is very interesting. It kind of reminds me of HBO's Game of Thrones ®©™, airing Sundays on HBO at 9 ET (in the game of thrones, you win or you die!™) and Syfy's Defiance ®©™, airing Mondays on Syfy at 9 ET (watch the show, play the game, change the world!™).
Legit question- are you a Redditor already and thus knew about the Rampart fiasco, or was Rampart such a fiasco that you found it as a "what not to do on your IAMA"? I visit Reddit, but don't contribute much. It's hard not to hear about the disaster that was that Woody Harrelson AMA, though.
To start off I'd like to say I am just a huge GoT fan, from the books to the expertly made TV show. Anyways, I'd love to ask you what you take into account when creating a language for the purpose of an audience? years ago I read an article on the creation of the elven languages for Lord of the rings, and I found it so interesting. So to sum up, How do you go about creating a language? Do you take verbs and vocab from existing/ancient languages and modify them? or do you start from scratch? Thanks for doing this AMA. There are a lot of different issues tangled up in this question. For example, for Lord of the Rings, they didn't create new languages: J. R. R. Tolkien created them. What they had to do was beef them up to handle translation (which, by the way, caused a lot of controversy amongst fans of Tolkien's languages [on the internet, a cow was had]).
Creating a language like Dothraki was different from creating some other language, because I had to work with what was already there in the books. So I didn't start from scratch. That said, no, I didn't take anything from existing languages. One is always inspired by certain ideas or snippets, but unless I'm dropping an Easter Egg for fun, I don't base my languages on natural languages. It's inappropriate to do so when you're creating a priori language.
What kind of Easter eggs have you dropped in for fun? Jokes for lingusitics majors, or the sort of thing anyone could get a giggle out of? When those of us who applied got to the final round for the Dothraki job, we decided to include each other's names and/or major languages in our Dothraki proposals, so in mine, the word ithkoil means "brittle" (from John Quijada's Ithkuil), simon is the word for a male relation (from Simon Olivier's name), and vil is an auxiliary meaning "to manage to" (from Bill Weldon's name).
That's amazing. It seems like you know a lot about these things. What did you study in school? I came to Berkeley as an English major and left as a Linguistics major. I then got my MA in Linguistics from UCSD.
Speaking of Easter Eggs and Lord of the Rings -- did you know that Viggo Mortensen said "Min elskling" to Liv Tyler in one of the first scene where they meet? He threw it in with all the Elvish, and it seems no one caught it. I did not know that. In the first episode of Game of Thrones, Jason Momoa ad-libbed in Maori, and I had no idea. I retconned something, because it actually sounded like plausible Dothraki, but then someone who was commenting on one of the stories on Dothraki pointed out that it was Maori, and said exactly what he was intending to say (the pronunciation actually wasn't spot on for Maori, but it was enough for them to identify it).
That said, no, I didn't take anything from existing languages. Really? Strange, I felt that some of the Dothraki words I heard in Season One were very similar to some Arabic words. I've been meaning to ask actually, how do you go about assigning a tone to a language? Do you start off thinking 'Okay this language needs to have a harsh and rough tone' or does it simply develop on it's own as you flesh out the language? There's really no words that came directly from Arabic. The one word that keeps coming up, anha, wasn't coined by me: it was coined by George R. R. Martin. It may have come from Arabic, but honestly, I doubt it. I think it was just a coincidence.
On the same subject, how do you feel when actors use some obscure language instead of using a 'created language' (one example I can think of is Sasha Baron Cohen speaking Hebrew instead of [whatever language he is pretending to speak])? Do you consider this cheating, laziness or do you simply not give a fack? Clearly with Borat, SBC had a reason for doing what he did. His work is intended as parody, though. It's not as if he was intending to portray a realistic Kazakh (can you imagine if he was?). It is unfortunate when a natural language is used when a created language should be (artistically) because it's work that could go to a language creator, and also because it seems odd to take a real language and give it to a fictional people. It feels disingenuous, at least—and, depending on the content, may even be offensive.
What did he say in Maori? I'm going to have to watch it now... (kiwi here :) ) He says "i te waka", which just means "(object marker) the canoe", right?
Would you consider yourself a cunning linguist? I ain't got no complaints, s'all I'm sayin'.
Will people in Yunkai speak different dialect of Valyrian as compared to Astapor? Different dialect; not a different language. It's not reflected in this season, though. It'd be a future project.
Are you gonna create other languages for GoT as well, particularly Braavosi? If they have other languages, I'll create them, but there haven't been any specific discussions with me for seasons 4 or beyond yet. One would imagine that Braavosi would need to be done, but I haven't heard anything yet.
Hey! I was wondering what the creative process is like for someone in your position? How do you get ready to just create a language??? All conlangs start with some idea. For Irathient from Defiance, for example, I decided I wanted the language to be spoken kind of slowly. That was the main spark for the entire language. The idea, then, begat a whole host of entailments. For example, since the language was going to be spoken on a TV show (a big constraint), I'd need to make it so that words could be dropped if need be without the main thrust of the sentence being lost. In order to accomplish that, I needed to make it so that marking was spread across sentence (so nominal agreement would need to show up on verbs and adjectives, verbs themselves needed to be dropped, etc.). That started a chain reaction, so that verbs were split into two parts (an auxiliary with 20% content, nominal agreement and grammatical information, and a stem with 80% content and some grammatical information), nouns were put into noun classes (so some of the content could be recovered if the noun was dropped), full adjectival agreement, etc.
So that's kind of how it goes. You start with some idea or constraint, and then start fleshing things out modulo that defining characteristic—all the while adhering to the basic principles of naturalism, if it's a naturalistic language you're creating.
1) What tips would you give to a conlanger? What about a club hoping to conlang? Wow! Well, hello, and nice to know you! You know, when I was there, it was SLUG. I blame Klinton Bicknell for changing it to SLUgS. He claims the change was organic; I see it as a hostile makeover. To answer out of order...
2) What's your favourite phoneme? (5) I'm in the Bay Area not infrequently (I have family there). I'd love to come visit! I didn't know SLUG/SLUgS was still up and running. I'm thrilled to hear it's still going!
3) Which is awesomer: Phonology or syntax? (4) (Not in order.) John McWhorter, Andrew Garrett and John Ohala. I sincerely hope you guys still get to benefit from John Ohala's experience, even though he's retired. The man's a genius. EDIT: And Sam Mchombo! Gah! How could I forget?! The professor of my very first linguistics class in whose class I first came up with the idea to create a language! (Thanks for reminding me, Tommy!)
4) Who were your favourite linguistics professors at Berkeley? (3) Phonology.
5) If you're ever in the Bay Area and feel like visiting your alma mater, SLUgS would be thrilled if you came to talk to us! (2) [ʒ]
Thanks for doing this IAmA, it's really exciting! (1) Do the evolution. It's the long way, but it's the right way—at least if you're aiming for naturalism. There is no other way to achieve an authentic result. Historical linguistics should inform this process, but artistry should guide it. And by "club", do you mean a group language? Because that's difficult. Check out this essay by Gary Shannon. It should prove useful. Akana is, I think, the best collaborative project we've seen in a while.
(5) I'll message you our email so when you think you might have time! The old name makes more sense. No one ever gets SLUgS right. Hmm... (5) It's not too late...! You can still change the name back! wrings hands and cackles maniacally
I had John McWhorter at Columbia last semester, and he was absolutely fantastic. Best professor I've ever had, and now I've fallen in love with linguistics. I'm glad to hear he's back teaching linguistics. He stepped away for a little while, but he's so good; I'm so happy to hear he's back. I saw him a couple months ago at TED, and it was good to see him get a wider audience.
What phrase or sentence in Dothraki do you think sounds coolest? Personally, I like the word mahrazh, which means "man". Ferrele asked me what my favorite phoneme was, and it's the one spelled zh, so I reserved it for some of my favorite words (e.g. zhalia "butterfly". The word for butterfly is usually one of my favorite words in a language. They're always unique: mariposa, Schmetterling, faraasha, papillon...).
Parvaaneh in Farsi (Persian) is butterfly. First "a" is short, like in stab. Ooh... Can you spell it in the script?
Pinpilinpauxa (thanks LaGeneralitat, sorry about the phonetics :P) in basque!! First time I've heard the Basque word. That's awesome!
Бабочка (babochka) in russian Kapalak in Uzbek. Wow, really? That looks a lot like "grandma", doesn't it? Бабушка. They're not related?
Mahrazh sounds a lot like Maharaj, which means king in Hindi. Really? I thought it was raja...
In Welsh butterfly is Pilipala :) I'm tempted to start a thread over at /linguistics that's just "List the Word for Butterfly In Your Language". I'd love to see those all gathered together in one place. This one actually looks, paradoxically, like it's related to the Italian word!
Pillangó or lepke in Hungarian (pillangó is more official while lepke is casual, somewhat diminutive). Ha! An official and casual word for butterfly?! Guess which language just moved to the top of my "to do" list!
蝶々 (ちょうちょう, chouchou) in Japanese. Kawaaaiii!
"Zhalia" means green in my language, though it is spelled Žalia. I understand you came up with this word? How? I like butterflies, so I wanted to come up with something pretty for it. :)
پروانه. Ahh...okay. (It's easier to read it in the Arabic script.) That's a gorgeous word. Does it kind of rhyme with "nirvana" (stress-wise), but with a short "a" as the first syllable?
Raja is king. Maha means great. so Mahatma is a title given to gandhi meaning great atma (spirit). maha is usually added to raja as well to mean great king (almost emperor) cause no king wants to go by just raja when you can make your title fancier. Ha! That's cool. Is it a prefix, or a separate word?
Just chiming in now: it's "vlinder" in Dutch! Thanks! I've got to write these down so I don't forget them.
Sommerfugl - Danish. The literal translation is bird of summer :-) the 'g' is silent but extends the length of the 'u' Wow! That etymology's even better than butterfly!
Féileacán Irish speaker checking in with our word for butterfly. Pronounced fey-la-caun where caun rhymes with the name Shaun which we spell Seán. Ah... Sounds like a transformer. I like it!
If you ever want to pick the brain of a native speaker of Irish throw me a PM and i'd be glad to offer an opinion. I speak the west coast dialect of Irish as i'm from Connemara but I am familiar with the other dialects as well. I've added you to my friends list. :)
Would you rather fight 1 Hodor-sized duck or 100 duck-sized Hodors? Thanks to Tales from the Hood, I'll take the Hodor-sized duck every time. Plus, I kind of have the feeling that I might be able to befriend the giant duck. I mean, I don't like to brag, but I feel like I have a connection with oddly-sized animals. I think I could charm that duck and turn it into my personal steed—and if I did that, world look out. You've got a new master.
So, we saw in the series that there is no word for 'thank you' in Dothraki, but what would you say comes closest to it? San athchomari which means "much respect".
Considering the fact that they not only had to learn the pronunciation but also had to know the meaning behind what they were saying, how difficult was it for the actors to learn Dothraki? Follow up, were they eventually able to form their own sentences apart from what was in the script? They didn't actually have to learn Dothraki to speak it; they just needed to be able to pronounce it and add the appropriate inflection to it. That said, they kind of picked up a few things. I met Amrita Acharia for the first time the other day, and she actually has all her lines memorized (though she doesn't necessarily know what they mean anymore). This is Dothraki. So the second line is a more or less literal translation—and you can see it doesn't line up with the English. The literal translation is there to help them see how it works in Dothraki so they can figure out which words to emphasize (and they also listen to the recordings). So they don't need to understand it: they can use this as a guide to figure it out.
To what extent have you developed Dothraki and Valyrian, in terms of grammar, vocabulary, figures of speech, etc.? I gave the vocab numbers for the languages in another comment. Both are fairly complete, grammatically. I continue to add to them as I go along, though. I can't imagine I'll ever stop working on them.
How would you summarize Dothraki and Valyrian, in terms of its phonetic and sociological characteristics? The sound of Dothraki I always thought of as like ((Arabic + Spanish)/2). High Valyrian was intended by GRRM to be the Latin of his universe, so I tried to honor that and make it sound like Latin—and to me, I think it does, though others disagree. Fleshing out High Valyrian lexically has been tougher, because we don't have a lot of information about what the empire was like before the Doom.
Have you created a script for Dothraki, just for fun, even though officially, they don't have one? Myself, no. Two people have. And I used a script I created for something else to write the word "Dothraki" at the top of my blog.
How much, or how little, collaboration did you have with George R. R. Martin? No collaboration, really, but he has been generous enough to answer my questions when I asked. He's also asked me for some translations (for example for the book of maps that came out last year, and for Winds of Winter), and that's been really cool.
What are your favorite languages, conlang or otherwise? Hawai'ian is my favorite language, though Arabic is a close second (its structure is beautiful). Some of my favorite conlangs are Sylvia Sotomayor's Kēlen, Denis Moskowitz's Rikchik, Doug Ball's Skerre... One of my early favorites that wasn't as complete was Mia Soderquist's ea luna, which, along with Polynesian, inspired my language Kamakawi. I also love Elephant's Memory, though I don't think it was ever fleshed out.
How do you feel about the current use of conlangs in pop culture? What do you see as the future of conlangs as an artform? At present, conlangs and conlanging have more visibility than they ever have. I'm greatly encouraged by their use in big productions like Game of Thrones, Avatar and Defiance, though I think we're still in the bubble right now; it remains to be seen if it will continue or fizzle. I'm excited by the prospect of conlanging down the line. I always felt like a practice can't really be an artform until there's collaboration and criticism. That didn't really happen until the mid 90s. Now, though, conlanging is so big that it's hard to argue that there's a single online community. So long as the old knowledge isn't lost and conlangers continue to learn from one another, I think we'll continue to get better and better and maybe thirty or so years down the line someone will finally produce a conlang masterpiece (something I don't believe we've seen as of yet).
After working a major project like Game of Thrones, how do you feel about collaborations between fields of study (linguistics, anthropology, physics, etc.) and art? Is it necessary, 'good to have', or mere embellishment? It depends how seriously you take your art. If you take it seriously, yes, it's necessary; if not, you can do whatever you want. There's a lot of DIY conlang stuff that happens in sci-fi and fantasy literature (and has for the better part of the 20th century) which is eyeroll inducing. It's like they liked Tolkien's success, but didn't want to bother emulating his process. I think as audiences become more discerning (and they are), the bar will continue to be raised—and there generally is no going back when that happens.
I apologize for playing fast and loose with 'a few'. Don't feel pressured to answer all of them. Great questions!
How do you say "If I look back I am lost" in Dothraki? I've wanted the phrase as a tattoo since reading the books but I don't want it to be so obvious in English. Hash anha atihik k'irgesi, hash anha aleisok. The last word is derived from Leigh Bardugo's word. :)
Do you ever dream in your created languages? I've never dreamed in a specific language of mine, but I have dreamt in or of languages that turned out to be fictitious. For example, I once had a dream that I was a linguistics professor putting together a problem for undergraduates on a dialect of Italian spoken in Sicily. It seemed fairly standard, but when I woke up, I realized the language that was in that problem set was crazy, and totally not related to anything. I wrote down as much of it as I could before the dream slipped from me (got like four words, I think?), and I posted to the Conlang-L about it... I'll have to dig up that post. It was a bizarre alternation the language displayed; totally unrealistic.
So the language didn't exist, but you understood it? How many marijuanas did you eat? Not only understood it, but was prepared to teach it. Dreams is a hell of a drug...
To what extent do the languages borrow from each other? How much of High Valerian can you find in Dothraki and vice versa? Valyrian borrows some specific cultural terms from Dothraki (e.g. arakh, khal, etc.), and Dothraki takes its technological vocabulary (to the extent it uses it) from some Valyrian language, be it High or Low (e.g. the Dothraki now have a word for "book": timvir. It comes from High Valyrian tembyr).
This is awesome. Whenever there are invented languages in a book/series/film, i'm completely hooked. Are you planning on publishing some sort of guideline to your languages? Like a dictionary, grammar rules... Please say you will, please do! I would love to publish a TY in various languages, but it's kind of a hard sell. I wouldn't say publishers have zero interest in it, but not enough to bump things over the edge. So yeah, I'd love to do that, but I'm not sure if or when it will happen. There are plenty of puns since the languages aren't tied to our world (or at least the Game of Thrones languages). My pun of the moment: The word for a sibling in High Valyrian is dubys, which was coined from the nickname for my little sister (I call her Dubu).
secondly: how "big" have the languages got so far? How many words does each of them have, how complex did you make the grammar? Any secret little puns you might have hidden somewhere? ;) I'd love to get about 8-10 thousand words in each one, and love to put out a grammalexicon for each one. I'm not sure if it'll happen. The grammars for each of them are fairly complete, in that they can be used to translate just about anything. It's just a matter of having enough words to be useful.
How quickly do you expect High Valyrian to reach the levels that the others are currently at? Not as quickly as Dothraki. Especially with Defiance, I don't have nearly as much time to do actual conlanging anymore (or, more specifically, conlanging that isn't immediately necessary). Also because I ended up using more Astapori Valyrian in season 3, it ended up getting more attention. But (if I can say this without sounding like a braggart) I really like High Valyrian. I want it to be larger. It's just a matter of finding the time now.
David, Defiance has just aired and I'm wondering how your experience has been working with the creative team at Syfy. How would you say your experience on Defiance compared to Game of Thrones? It's been entirely different. On Game of Thrones, I basically serve as a translator: I get scripts, I translate them, I send them off, and then I see what the result is when the episodes air live. That's been the extent of my involvement thus far.
For Defiance, I am actually a part of the team. I've been to the set three times, worked with all the actors, worked directly with the art department and the writers. My feedback was sought out on all the scripts (I actually have the entire first season on DVDs sitting on my desk right now. Still don't have season 2 of GoT [though I've got it on my DVR]), and I got to write a lot of material. I basically fill out the histories and cultures of all the alien races. (Oh, I also got to write lyrics for some of Bear McCreary's songs, which was awesome. That dude's a genius.)
Of course, there's pros and cons to everything. I have a bigger role in Defiance, but that means I have a lot more work to do (and I'm still doing it. We're working on Syfy Sync content right now). For Game of Thrones, I do the translations, and I'm done! And they're great about letting me work on the languages and do stuff with them in my spare time. Overall, it's been extremely positive experience, which is refreshing for a conlanger.
Dothraki sounds just like it should! Thank you for this. That was my number one goal; nice to hear it. :)
The rest of this question I answered above (see MelanieKira's question), but it's not super encouraging. There has to be more demand. There's simply not enough jobs to go around. Even if every potential project hired a conlanger, that's a fraction of the total projects produced, because not every TV show or film needs a created language (though I think it would've improved Sleepless in Seattle). So there's never going to be as much demand as there is for, say, actors, makeup artists, sound editors, etc.
The best thing to do is to, first, continue to create languages. Look at the languages others have created and learn from them: continue to improve. Second, stay connected. Share your languages with the community, put them online—make yourself visible. Third, if possible, see if you can beef up your resume. There's got to be hundreds of potential projects within literature, if you can possibly wrest a potential conlang away from a fantasy author (they tend to do their own thing, which, 99% of the time, they shouldn't have). The jobs may not be as big as Game of Thrones, but they should be there. Whenever the LCS hears about them, we put them up on the LCS Jobs Board. Anyone can apply for those, but bear in mind that you'll be competing with the rest of the conlang community. Hopefully as the years go by, projects like GoT and Defiance will beget more projects—and, more importantly, increase the status of conlanging as an artistic endeavor worthy of pursuit. If we can break and do more collaborations with fantasy authors, there may be enough demand to allow someone to really break in for when a larger job comes up.
When you know an alien language is only going to be spoken in one episodes and a few sentences, do you just come up with a few words, or is it more involved? I haven't yet worked on anything where language plays such a minor role. I will say that if you have, say, a movie where there's literal going to be one line, you probably don't need a language if the movie isn't going to spawn sequels, or a following for those aliens specifically, etc. So something like Galaxy Quest. That movie's incredible. But it's not like it was setting up for a franchise, or anyone's going to be wanting to speak like the little bitey aliens (do they have a name? The one's that call out Grignak?). So there's no point to investing the time or money to flesh that out. If there is a chance, though, that there could be a following or interest beyond the performance—however small—I think it is worth it. And certainly if there's going to be even six or seven lines. It comes to a point, sizewise, where gibberish just won't cut it, and it's nice to see that producers et al. are taking that seriously nowadays. (For example, I think Jabba the Hutt should've had his own language, no question.)
Have you ever re-used languages in different shows? Oh, and no I haven't re-used languages. Yikes! That'd be a super contract foul.
Does Irathient written language follow an Arabic-like word structure or is it pictographic? Or neither? Neither. Irathient's script is an abugida. Each glyph of Irathient is a VC syllable. This can be see easily when it's combined with one of the main vowels, but the base symbol can be a consonant by itself or a consonant preceded by [ǝ] (schwa; a reduced vowel). So if you have a word of Irathient like the greeting above (eseneziri), in the script it will be chunked like this: es-en-ez-ir-i. So five letters. If you have a word like tlanǝs, though (it means "a short visit), it will actually look like this: t-l-an-s. A fluent (or literate) Irathient speaker would know that there's a schwa between the n and s, though.
How is an abugida different than a syllabary like the Japanese kana? To put it simply, in Japanese, there is not necessarily any relationship between ka, ki, ko, ku and ke. In an abugida, there is clearly a base consonantal character, and there are more or less predictable alternations between variants (so there will be a clear relationship between ka and ki but also between ki and ni). The thing that makes them different from an alphabet is that these syllables are chunked into single glyphs, rather than separated into phonemes (i.e. single sounds).
Did you get that idea from hangul? If so, that is totally bad ass. Hangul is my favourite alphabet! Edit: just read the wiki, apparently not. My bad. Your thing looks cool too! How does it differ? For Irathient, I was more inspired by Sinhalese and Tamil, in general, but the VC combination was done specifically because of how plurality works in Irathient. It made sense to have orphan vowels at the end of a word.
What languages can you fluently speak? English and Spanish (though my Spanish is the Spanish of a heritage speaker. I run into problems sometimes and am much better with family members).
What is the first word that you created in Dothraki? What is your favorite word in any language, and why? Looking back at my paper notes, it was horse, actually: hrazef. I guess that's appropriate. Yeah, when I was coming up with test words for sentences, that was the first. I also came up with a fake word for "man" (just nam; I reversed the order of the letters. Changed the word later), then a word for "apple" (qazer; still in the language) and "bite" (ostat; still in the language). You can guess what the first test sentences were.
I already mentioned "butterfly" (tends to be a favorite word in every language), but my favorite word... One of my all time favorite is highly dependent on the dialect of Arabic (the pronunciation changes). I love the word دجاج, which means "chicken". In the first dialect of Arabic I learned, that's pronounced [di.ˈʒaːʒ]. In Egyptian, it's pronounced [di.ˈgaːg] which just sounds awful. Other favorites use the same phoneme, e.g. جيش "army" [ʒeʃ], رجال [ri.ˈʒaːl] "men"... Probably not a coincidence these are coming from Arabic.
You mentioned having Hungarian as being on your to-do list; Hungarians were also historically connected with horses, and as such lots of idioms and swearwords have something to do with horses. For example, one of the most common insults is "horse dick up your arse" (lófasz a seggedbe). HA! New favorite swear.
When you listen to death metal, how easily can you make out the lyrics? Death metal? It's usually not too tough. Black metal? Nearly impossible.
Favorite programming language? The one you used on the TI-82 calculator—the only one I know. But, man, back in high school I got some use of that! I once created a program where if you had three equations with three variables, all you had to do was plugin the coefficients (and what the equation equalled), and it would return to you what x, y and z were. It helped me solve one problem on the math portion of the SAT in seconds. Worth it.
